junior high assembly
July 7-11, 2008, Hiwassee College, Madisonville, TN.
For youth who have completed grades 6 through 8.

Two separate events, one fantastic week at one location!

Speaker for JHA/SHA:
Rev. Sarah Slack from New Life UMC, Knoxville

Worship Band for Senior High Assembly:
FIND THE ONE from Cokesbury UMC, Knoxville

Worship Band for Junior High Assembly:
Ralph Jeffers from Sulphur Springs UMC, Johnson City

Each assembly is a week of discipleship featuring awesome worship, awesome people and one awesome God. It's joining together with others your age to learn, grow, and laugh. It's waking up and worshipping through word and song. It's coming to an event and leaving with a "family". It's an opportunity to open up, to get real, to focus. It's a chance to shift your thoughts, your actions, and your life from things of this world to the heart of Jesus. After all, true worship takes place when all people within a community seek the presence of God and are accepting of each other. That's the biggest part of Assembly.

And it's required. (Get it? . . . "assembly required".)

A typical day at Assembly includes:

  • Morning Worship
  • Family Group (your small group)
  • Interest Groups (such as group games, a spiritual look at relationships, prayer practices, etc.)
  • Free Time
  • Evening Activity (such as a festival of gifts and talents, special worship, inflatable games, ice cream social, etc.)
  • Dorm Group (smaller gender-based group)

Here is what Amber of the Chattanooga District has to say about Assembly: "It was awesome! One of the most spiritual events I've been to! Because of it, I'm closer to God and more firm in my faith."

SHA and JHA will remain separate events though they will be the same week at the same campus. While SHA participants are at worship and family groups, JHA participants will be at a different location on campus having interest groups and free time; and vice-versa. We may combine some evening activities, such as the festival on the lawn SHA and JHA participants will be housed separately.

Attendance at our Assembly events is based on grade. Junior High Assembly is open to youth who have completed the 6th grade up to youth who have completed the 8th grade. Senior High Assembly is open to youth who have completed the 8th grade up to youth who have completed the 12th grade. If a youth has completed the 8th grade, we leave it in the discretion of the youth, parents, and youth pastor to determine whether the youth may have a better experience at Jr High Assembly or Senior High Assembly.

Registration fees include program fees, lodging and meals.

Bring enough Assembly-first-timer friends and you veterans can come for free! The "Bring a Friend" discount is for participants who have previously attended an Assembly. Recruit a first-time participant and receive a $25 discount on your registration fee. This discount is not limited to the number of "friends" per registration, but you cannot exceed your total registration fee. The registrations must be received together -- mailed in the same envelope. A "friend" can only be counted once for one participant and does not need to attend the same Assembly, but must attend in the same year, whether Junior High or Senior High. Be sure to complete the "Bring a Friend to Assembly" information block on the Registration form.

Early Registration:  $140 (postmarked by May 6, 2008)
Regular Registration:  $165 (postmarked by June 3, 2008)
Late Registration:  $190 (postmarked after June 3, 2008)

Cancellation Request:  June 17, 2008

For Junior High Assembly, we have a Big Brother/Sister mentoring program, in which youth who have completed grades 11 and 12 can serve on our JHA staff under the supervision of older adults. It's a terrific way for older youth to be in ministry, and it's great mentoring for the older youth and the JHA participants! To download an application, please click here. Job description is also available.
